Thank you

I owe Dave Adsit of Superelastic Iconoclastic a huge thanks for his praise of this site. I've been doing this for a month or so and enjoying every bit, and I'm happy to learn that other people appreciate my work. Dave, you really are too kind. "Paul seems drawn to the bleak postindustrial moonscapes that dot the Pioneer Valley, today's echoes and remnants of that gilded age when things people needed and wanted to buy were manufactured here."

I don't think I can do his weblog justice with my pitch here, but I'll say this: Give him a visit. Dave's writing is funny at times, eloquent always, and hell - he's from Western Massachusetts, that has to count for something.

Mike over at Satan's Laundromat has updated his layout. A site's layout doesn't matter that much to me, still, it's a vast improvement - take a look. I know, I'll fix my layout soon.

Photo Friday: Found

I don't see myself entering Photo Friday each week but I did think this photo was appropriate for this week's theme, 'found'.

I headed up to Greenfield today and checked out the remains of the GTD smokestack. Now it's just a bunch of bricks. I hope they do something useful with the site. I did take a souvenir brick.

GTD follow-up

If you're wondering, the Greenfield Tap and Die smokestack came down Wednesday. I may drive up there and take some pictures, and maybe a brick or two.

2 Chronicles 7:14: "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

How can people love this country but at the same time say that God is punishing us for our "wicked ways?" If even God hates America then why do you defend it?

The defunct Greenfield Tap and Die plant has come down, all that is left now is the old GTD smokestack - the landmark of Greenfield's Meridian Street. I visited the site this evening because tomorrow at 9:15 AM, the smokestack is coming down.

Greenfield is one more in the list of many New England 'mill towns' that have never really recovered from the collapse of the US manufacturing industry. Like Holyoke, it seems too empty for its size. Holyoke, though, is a lot worse-off in the crime and poverty departments. GTD rode on the World War II boom for a while, but in the end automation, mismanagement, and consolidation killed the plant on Green River.

You can't call it a photoblog unless you do the shutter speed trick at some point. So here it is.

Known as either the Whately Diner or the Fillin' Station, the sign on the road merely says "Diner." You're not allowed to eat here unless you are a trucker, or you are drunk.

We had some downtime today, I guess my webhost sucks. Hopefully they will make good on their "99.9% uptime guarantee."

I haven't updated the site in a while. I will have more time soon to shoot and process images though.
